Wei likes to chill out in front of a hot baking oven.
Umut is a basketball statistics machine.
Norm plays both air and actual guitar with equal passion.
And Ghasem can always be counted on to tell us to ‘get back to work.’
Welcome to Coffee Chat, our twice weekly get-together where we pose a single question, sometimes silly, sometimes profound, and hear what our colleagues have to say.
What started out as a way to connect from our home offices at the beginning of the pandemic has become a central part of our company culture – a 30-minute break every Monday and Thursday where we come together as a team to learn more about each other.
It’s proof that sometimes it’s the small and simple things we do that give us the greatest value.
Some people jump right in with a story, others hang back until the end; the only rule of Coffee Chat is no politics or religion.
These days we gather in a circle in an open area of the office, computer screens handy for colleagues Zooming in from home, and we chat.
We also learn so much about our colleagues, about where they come from, what they left behind, what they’ve brought with them to Fredericton, what they enjoy about living here and what they want for their futures.
We find out that within all that diversity, there is a lot we have in common.
Most of us love getting outdoors on the weekend, at least during the summer months.
Family is important and a lot of us have strong memories of our parents supporting, teaching and teasing us when we were young.
Just about all of us had a job or a manager we couldn’t wait to escape.
And while we can all agree that we love a good meal, what goes into that meal – the flavours, the heat level – is always up for fun debate.
Once everyone has answered, Ghasem declares our sign-off with a laugh; ‘Get back to work’.
So we do, a little more connected to each other.
